The Éadach by Sara O’Neill Zodiac Series is a flight of fancy fashion reimagining of the Star Signs inspired by a long forgotten church ceiling, the northcoast night sky and a beloved collection of old and battered 1970s ‘Jackie’ annuals.
These fabulous creatures have been swirling around Sara’s imagination for many years, finally brought to life via her pencils and sketchpad and captured in vibrant silk prints. Each character has been dreamt up based on the supposed personality traits of the signs, each print meticulously researched and crafted featuring the colours, planet, birth flower and stone, and constellation associated with each sign. This is the kind of work that Sara loves the most, where her imagination can run wild and she can lose herself in painstakingly detailed pencil work for days on end.
As with the rest of the Éadach collection, Sara’s wanders around the rugged northcoast of Ireland, full of myth and legend, have a part to play. St Cuthbert’s, a tiny church ruin adjacent to Dunluce Castle and the reputed resting place of the Spanish noblemen and sailors of the Girona who perished on this treacherous coastline in 1588 was a major, if slightly unusual, inspiration. The building originally had a thatched roof, now of course long gone. The bizarre things being that the ceiling of the church is said to have been painted with the signs of the Zodiac! Sara’s first memory of this church was when staying in the ‘Brownie’ house across the road when she was eight, awaking up and seeing the church and graveyard looming out of the coastal fog in the early morning. Now it’s a favourite jaunt with her retriever, Blyton.
